Yes ya think ya know, you clinicians that work all ya lives to save people from themselves. Ya go to school ya learn all there is to know about addiction the various methods of dealing with it all that clinical stuff that social workers go through , the endless paper work the different styles of approach and the team meetings. Ya do this for years and because of all the wasted souls and also those that have recovered and are leading some normalcy of life, ya still think ya know. You parents, relatives and friends that have experienced the abnormality, aberrant and recalcitrant changes in the addict that ya know, you also think ya know. None of you, not one of you really know what drives the addict. Nor will you ever know fully. Listen to me carefully, you will never know un less you walk in his/her shoes, oh yes you will have a concept or a clue but that is where the knowing will stop. I can speak for the crack addict because I am one that is in recovery, I have experienced all that drives the addict and you for as long as you have known me, whether you are married to me or you are my brother/sister, my mother/father or the closest that any one human can be to another you will never as long as life endures in your body understand what has driven me. Does that make me an anomaly? No! Because there are many of me out there we are kindred souls, we attract each other primarily because of the common pain, anguish and degradation that we knew at the time of the height of our addiction was destroying us a little piece at a time. The hunger, the hunger is all consuming it fills and boils up in your body, in your mind and has to be satiated but is unsatisfiable. Ya think for a moment as the high climbs to its peak that you are about to reach that pinnacle, that nirvannic place that you have been striving for every time ya take a hit. It rises and ya know without a doubt that you are about to take off on gossamer wings to a euphoric state where no man has ever gone. But it does not happen but ya know it will just one more hit that is all that it will take, just one more that's all. You have got to do whatever ya need to do to reach that state. Steal ya momma's stereo, take yo daddy's car, bust someone in the head and take their money, time is short ya have got to be quick the time is now ya can feel it in every inch of yo body. Ya know when ya is stealing yo momma's stereo, yo daddy's car or busting someone in the head fo there money Ya know this is wrong. Ya know that it goes against all that ya have been taught. But ya can't help it you are driven by an unsatiable drive for nirvana, one that will not be denied. It will have you do the most damnable acts possible to strive for it. I remember the hunger, oh yes how well do I remember it. At times it drove me to exhaustion. Seriously I would stay awake and on the move for 2 or 3 days sometimes longer on the hunt for the next hit. I would not stop to eat, bathe or anything but what I was searching for. Then suddenly the body would say "enough" and I would drop in my tracks and go to sleep no matter where I was at. Yes I remember the hunger, I will remember the hunger 'til the day I die.

There are many people that having been on drugs and/or working the streets that having gotten tired of the chaos of the life style attempt to let it all go and attempt entering mainstream life. There are many problems that prevent a lot of them from making it and most of the problems stem from themselves. The longer a person lives on the dark side the harder it is for them to maintain a mainstream life style. Here are the basic reasons for failure: 1) Lack of support 2) Being use to dealing with people on a harsh, demanding and aggressive Level 3) Lack of timeliness-usually does things based upon need rather than when it needs to be done. 4) A short, abrasive and violent temper necessary to make it in the streets for the long run 5) Lack of ability to recognize authority figures based on the new mainstream paradigm - not because of who has the best dope or he who has the money is in control. 6) Unwillingness to let go of street "friends" and situations that perpetuate the street lifestyle There are many other factors that can prevent people from staying on the straight and narrow but these are the main ones. I personally I have taken on the role of mentor and role model for two individuals that have both used dope and other situations indicative of their personal experiences. If you doubt my qualifications look to some of my previous blogs therein lies my credentials which is derived from experience. One of these individuals is well on the way toward stability she has already recognized the errors of some of her street ways and is in the process of amending them. Though she could fall and relapse at any time she has the skills now to pick her self up and continue on. Now the other is a different story, she is freshly out of the streets her situation is very tenuous. It will be the long haul for her and she of the two will have the longest and hardest road because her street activity runs into multiple levels of illicit activity. Also considering that she has been out there for quite a long time the characteristics that she acquired to succeed out there will stand against her. But she can make it if she preservers. Now why do I go out of my way to help guide people along the mainstream road. I do so because at this point in my life I have had some realizations and one of them is that it is our duty as individuals who are haves to reach out and assist those who are have nots so they can became haves also. I am not a saver of the world but I try to do my bit one or two people at a time. I don't know how successful this endeavor will be but I feel the need within me to try. There is nothing like living in the light and I want all my brothers and sisters groveling around down there in the pit to see they have a choice. They have forgotten, I know because I was there and I know that I forgot. When you are down there in the pit you cannot see above your level, it does not exist. I will tell ya a benefit that I receive from my efforts one that I never expected and that is my interaction, troubleshooting and problem solving with these dear folks helps me to stay clean and well away from the pit. For through their eyes and minds I can see the reflection of the pit and all its inhabitants and all the vile things they have to go through to survive. I see these events freshly with astounding clarity and I know that no matter what my personal circumstances I cannot, will not go to that place of purgatory. So now you see why I believe I am my brothers/sisters keeper.
When a woman especially one with no resources leaves an abusive relationship most often she has no where to go. The lack of affordable housing and waiting lists mean that many women and their children have to choose between living on the streets or continue living with their abuser. Shelters are often filled to capacity and the women and their children often get turned away.
50% of the 24 cities surveyed by the U.S. Conference of Mayors identified domestic violence as a primary cause of homelessness (U.S. Conference of Mayors, 2005).
There are many forms of domestic violence:
Sexual Abuse also referred to as molestation or the euphemism "bad touch". The different forms of this abuse can be rape or sexual assault, psychological such as verbal sexual behaviour or stalking and the use of position of trust for sexual porposes. There are other forms it can take such as emotional abuse, intimidation, economic deprivation or threats of violence.
Attention to domestic violence first started in the 1970s as the public became more aware that wives were being beaten by their husbands. It is said that only a third of of the cases of domestic violence are reported in the US. domestic violence is a serious, preventable public health problem affecting more than 32 million Americans, or more than 10% of the U.S. population. Studies have shown that 40% of all Homeless stated that domestic abuse contributed to their condition of Homelessness.
Domestic violence can also take place in lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender relationships, and can involve other family members, including children.
While both men and women may experience incidents of inter-personal violence, women are considerably more likely to experience repeated and severe forms of violence, including sexual violence. The violence they experience is also more likely to have a sustained psychological/emotional impact or result in injury or death.
Domestic violence against women by men is "caused" by the misuse of power and control within a context of male privilege. Male privilege operates on an individual and societal level to maintain a situation of male dominance, where men have power over women and children. In this way, domestic violence by men against women can be seen as a consequence of the inequalities between men and women, rooted in patriarchal traditions that encourage men to believe they are entitled to power and control over their partners.
Women experiencing domestic violence may also turn to alcohol or drugs as a form of escape from the violence. This will then complicate the lives of abused women that have not only been physically abused, emotionally disrupted and now they are alcoholics and /or drug addicts. Their recovery can be extremely difficult to achieve if at all. If they stay Homeless for any length of time the chances of them seeking services becomes less as time goes on. The fact is the longer you remain Homeless the harder it is to go back to being mainstream.
It is up to you the individual to make sure that spousal abuse stops. Visit your local battered women's shelters listen to the stories, volunteer to assist where you can. Seek out the statistics and all the available information about domestic abuse in your area. Form a group of interested and knowledgeable people. Start a Google Group amongst your group to disseminate information. Then do something about it.
When we are anguished or stressed or we have had a bad day at the office we can do any number of things to relieve our selves from the condition. We can go to the gym and work off tension I believe that doctors will tell you that exercise is a good stress reliever. Running is another one. Friends and relatives can be a good source to bounce stuff off of and receive in return positive feed back. If things get really bad you can always go see a counselor, psychologist or other professional whose job it is to listen and advise.
This modern high tech world that we live in is a huge producer of many, many forms of stress. The bus didn't get you to work on time and the boss is looking askance at you. A driver cut you off as you was about to get of the freeway and you had to go to the next exit. You owe the IRS more money this year because you forgot to up the amount that is being taken out of your checks. These situations can pile up and if you don't deal with them in a positive and constructive way they can cause you to physical ailments or exasperate the ones you already have. People have committed suicide because they could not deal with the stressors in their life.
We are very fortunate to have the resources that are available to us to off load the gremlins of stress.
But what about the poor Homeless people that you see every day in the streets of your city. What stressors do they have? Are their problems the same as ours?
The fact is you cannot comprehend the depth and the breath of traumas and stressors that the average Homeless individual go through. Can you possibly imagine having to hunker under a bridge while in a torrential downpour. Yes it may keep the rain from hitting you vertically but what about the wind and rain that comes in horizontally. Do you think that would cause some stress?
What if the temperature was dipping to below freezing and you are Homeless and frantically looking for anything that could shelter you. Yes you do have a winter coat and two pairs of pants and socks on but you desperately need something to shelter you from the biting, numbing heat robbing wind. A big enough box for you to crawl in, a line of thick bushes, two closely set buildings anything that will shield you from the deadly wind. Oh yes…there is the cold those double sets of pants and socks aren't quite going to get it. Your sleeping bag got soaked and ruined during the last downpour. You have got to find some blankets at the very least a lot of newspaper and some plastic sheeting that furniture comes in to shield and insulate you. Do you think that is enough to cause some small amount of stress?
Oh yes.. you say they don't have to go through all that drama they can go into a nice warm shelter and get a decent meal and a place to sleep. Ok shelters are a good thing they do get people off the street for a period of time but you have to be in by , lets say 6 pm and out by 5 am. But then in the winter you are sharing a huge dorm with about eighty guys and every body is coughing, sneezing and snoting all over you. Plus most guys have bathed but some haven't that should have a week ago and the scent is in the air. So there still is some stress I would imagine, don't you?
Don't forget all the other stressors can exist in a Homeless persons life the constant hunt for food, free medical care, socks, shoes and bus passes all of these are high contributors of trauma in a persons life especially when you don't have them. Lets not forget the stress of asking you for money on the street corners when they know you don't want to look at them let alone give them something that might benefit them. Another one is looking for a place to camp, you have got to find your camping spot during daylight and you have to be bedded down before the sun goes down because you can't set up your dwelling spot in the dark.
So what do the Homeless do when they get overstressed? They can't go to the gym, I guess they could run if they have been eating half way decently. They certainly can't talk it out with their peers who have the same problems if not worse. Drinking helps yeah it gives you a brief time of forgetfulness and bliss something we all need occasionally. Drugs and drinking now there is a guaranteed combination that will take you completely out of this dreadful condition for a time. Lets not forget deteriation into mental illness now there is one that will take you completely out of this mess and knowing that our health care system has totally forgotten about you, you are gone 'till the end of your time.
So you think you have got it bad, even if you just had the bare necessities of "three hots and a cot" you are doing much, much better than any person living on the streets in any part of the world. Things don't look so bad now after all do they. At least you can go home at the end of the day, get something to eat out of the fridge, drink a beer, flop on the couch and watch television.
Oh yes… I forgot what about the Homeless what do they do at the end of the day.
We go through our through cities center and we see the Homeless and the working poor sleeping or socializing in the parks or panhandling on the streets and we lump them all together in our minds eye as being Homeless.
Do we really know who they are, where they came from. The word Homeless has come to be a convenient catch phrase for a group of people that allows us to see them in a pigeon hole without actually knowing who they are or where they are from. We have de-personalized them to the point that we do not know who they are.
No one really knows how many Homeless there really are. HUD has mandated that each state provide a census of their Homeless population but they did not provide the means to do it. So each states efforts are a lackluster and none to accurate count. So the numbers that you see in publications and in the media are generally extrapolations based on what is considered known numbers.
Homeless Male Veterans
A third of the Homeless men in the US are veterans to look at it another way one out of three Homeless males are veterans and as many as 200,000 go to sleep at night with no place to call home.
Homeless Female Veterans
The risk of Homelessness is two to four times as much for female veterans as for other women. About 8000 women veterans lack permanent shelter and those numbers will increase as more of them return from war.
Right now, the number of Homeless male and female Vietnam era veterans is greater than the number of service persons who died during that war. Atlthough many Homeless veterans served in combat in Vietnam and suffer from PTSD, at this time, epidemiologic studies do not suggest that there is a causal connection between military service, service in Vietnam, or exposure to combat and homelessness among veterans. Family background, access to support from family and friends, and various personal characteristics (rather than military service) seem to be the stronger indicators of risk of Homelessness.
Homeless Alcoholics and drug addicts
.In their book, A Nation In Denial, Alice Baum and Donald Burnes shatter many of the myths surrounding the root causes of Homelessness, which have little to do with the economy, governmental social policies, lack of affordable housing, and so forth. According to their research at least 65-85% of all homeless adults suffer from chronic alcoholism and drug addiction. Forty to fifty percent of these individuals are "dually diagnosed" - suffering from addiction to alcohol and/or drugs, as well.
Homeless Mentally Ill
Approximately 20 - 25% of the single adult Homeless population suffers from some form of severe and persistent mental illness (National Resource and Training Center onHomelessness and Mental Illness, 2003). While 22% of the American population suffers from a mental illness, a small percentage of the 44 million people who have a serious mental illness are Homeless at any given point in time (National Institute of Mental Health, 2005). a new wave of deinstitutionalization and the denial of services or premature and unplanned discharge brought about by managed care arrangements may be contributing to the continued presence of seriously mentally ill persons within the homeless population.
Homelessness and Poverty
Poverty and Homelessness are inextricably linked. Poor people are frequently unable to pay for housing, food, childcare, health care, and education. Difficult choices must be made when limited resources cover only some of these necessities. Often it is housing, which absorbs a high proportion of income that must be dropped. Being poor means being an illness, an accident, or a paycheck away from living on the streets.
I don't have access to numbers on number of poverty stricken people that are Homeless which is ok because I have already stated that the numbers are inaccurate because there has not been any real effort to get a good count.
Homeless Children
There are at least 1.35 million children that are Homeless every year Homeless children get sick twice and hungry twice as often than other children. They also have many more mental health problems than other children. The vast majority of Homeless children and youth live in shelters, doubled up with friends or relatives, or in situations such as motels and campgrounds.
Homeless Families with Children
One of the fastest growing segments of the Homeless population is families with children. A 2005 study revealed that of the counted homeless population there were 98,452 Homeless families, making up 41% of the entire Homeless population. Recent evidence confirms that homelessness among families is increasing. Requests for assisted
housing by low-income families and individuals increased in 86 percent of the cities during the past year. The same study found the requests increased by an average of 5% in 2005 (U.S.Conference of Mayors, 2005). While the average number of emergency shelter beds for homeless families with children increased by 8% in 2005, an average of 32% of requests for shelter by homeless families were denied in 2005 due to lack of resources.
Homeless Drop Outs
There are also the Homeless individuals that want to not have responsibility for the life style that we in the mainstream maintain. They don't want to pay utility bills, rent or be responsible for any of the trappings of mainstream civilization. They prefer to be free to come and go at will and to be only responsible for the bare necessities of their well being. Many of them are not addicts or mentally ill. They just got tired of the rat race that we compete in and dropped out. Sometimes I look at the individuals in this group and realize that they are not fraught with the insecurities, neuroses, migraines and pressures that our civilization is air to. I wonder sometimes if I adopted their ethos would I be less bent than I am.
I have placed a face on the Homeless now they are more than just a lump of people in a pigeon hole, now you can see the scope and the depth of this despicable condition. I have brought the condition a little closer to home for you. There also may be other sub groups that I did not mention possible some that I am not aware of even after all my years working in the field of Homelessness.
Now when you see the Homeless on the streets I want you to see them as individuals with their on subset of problems and reasons for being where they are at. Please be compassionate and kind when you come in contact with them. We are part of the problem we can also be part of the solution.
In the first part of "Truth and Deception" we showed you how the media distorts the news and present a biased view of it based on their own needs rather than our need to see the news as it really is.
Part two will demonstrate to you how the government also lies to us and feeds us their twisted, biased and sometimes fabricated rendition of events in the world.
Have you noticed that there has been a lot of tossing about of the word democracy by the administration? We hear about how they want to democratize the East, how Muslim extremists are a threat to democracy and how democracy this and democracy that.
Do we know what a democracy is? Well I am not going to give you the definition, you can look that up your self. But I will touch on one aspect of a democracy that we need to focus on in this blog and that is that in a democracy a major principle is that the majority rules. In a democracy a minority can suffer from the tyranny of the majority.
We are not living in a democracy because the forefathers of this country that is your forefathers designed this country to be a constitutional republic in which one aspect of it is that the will of the majority is tempered by protection for individual rights so that no individual group has absolute power. The individual protections under our government is called The Bill of Rights. This is the type of government that used in the United States of America. Think I don't know what I am talking about , look it up and be educated. The Federal government has been pushing the democracy thing because they want to have absolute power over all decisions. You have seen and heard Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld making up shit on the fly. You have seen them trying to squeeze Congress out of the decision making process. They have been usurping powers that they don't really have illegally firing Attorneys Generals across the nation to replace them with cronies and others they are in bed with. All the time re-educating us on what type of government we have in preparation for their complete domination of all policy and decision making processes. Though you may not have known about the constitutional republic thing you do know though you may have attempted to ignore it, sweep it under the rug or just hope that shit will straighten itself out.
Look at this and listen and view well:
That didn't get ya did it maybe this one will:
Getting the idea, not yet? Listen to a discussion on the hill about a bill pay attention you will hear the words Constitutional Republc but most important is in what context it is used.
So therefore we are not a democracy we are instead constitutional republic this is not what the federal government want you to believe nor does the media because they are in bed with the feds. Our freedoms are being eroded when people for any reason do not have the right of habeas corpus. But you have seen the feds deny it to the so called "war on terror" detainees. Many of these peoples that have not been proven to be guilty of anything.
Ok you are not yet convinced look at this list of atrocities and tell me that our government is not corrupt, that they will not do anything to further their own purposes even to the point of sacrificing any of us.
1932 The Tuskegee Syphilis Study begins. 200 black men diagnosed with syphilis are never told of their illness, are denied treatment, and instead are used as human guinea pigs in order to follow the progression and symptoms of the disease. They all subsequently die from syphilis, their families never told that they could have been treated.
1935 The Pellagra Incident. After millions of individuals die from Pellagra over a span of two decades, the U.S. Public Health Service finally acts to stem the disease. The director of the agency admits it had known for at least 20 years that Pellagra is caused by a niacin deficiency but failed to act since most of the deaths occured within poverty-striken black populations.
1940 Four hundred prisoners in Chicago are infected with Malaria in order to study the effects of new and experimental drugs to
combat the disease. Nazi doctors later on trial at Nuremberg cite this American study to defend their own actions during the Holocaust.
1942 Chemical Warfare Services begins mustard gas experiments on approximately 4,000 servicemen. The experiments continue until 1945 and made use of Seventh Day Adventists who chose to become human guinea pigs rather than serve on active duty.
1943 In response to Japan's full-scale germ warfare program, the U.S. begins research on biological weapons at Fort Detrick, MD.
1944 U.S. Navy uses human subjects to test gas masks and clothing. Individuals were locked in a gas chamber and exposed to mustard gas and lewisite.
1945 Project Paperclip is initiated. The U.S. State Department, Army intelligence, and the CIA recruit Nazi scientists and offer them immunity and secret identities in exchange for work on top secret government projects in the United States.
1945 "Program F" is implemented by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). This is the most extensive U.S. study of the health effects of fluoride, which was the key chemical component in atomic bomb production. One of the most toxic chemicals known to man, fluoride, it is found, causes marked adverse effects to the central nervous system but much of the information is squelched in the name of national security because of fear that lawsuits would undermine full-scale production of atomic bombs.
1946 Patients in VA hospitals are used as guinea pigs for medical experiments. In order to allay suspicions, the order is given to change the word "experiments" to "investigations" or "observations" whenever reporting a medical study performed in one of the nation's veteran's hospitals.
1947 Colonel E.E. Kirkpatrick of the U.S. Atomic Energy Comission issues a secret document (Document 07075001, January 8, 1947) stating that the agency will begin administering intravenous doses of radioactive substances to human subjects.
1947 The CIA begins its study of LSD as a potential weapon for use by American intelligence. Human subjects (both civilian and military) are used with and without their knowledge.
1950 Department of Defense begins plans to detonate nuclear weapons in desert areas and monitor downwind residents for medical problems and mortality rates.
1950 I n an experiment to determine how susceptible an American city would be to biological attack, the U.S. Navy sprays a cloud of bacteria from ships over San Franciso. Monitoring devices are situated throughout the city in order to test the extent of infection. Many residents become ill with pneumonia-like symptoms.
1951 Department of Defense begins open air tests using disease-producing bacteria and viruses. Tests last through 1969 and there is concern that people in the surrounding areas have been exposed.
1953 U.S. military releases clouds of zinc cadmium sulfide gas over Winnipeg, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Fort Wayne, the Monocacy River Valley in Maryland, and Leesburg, Virginia. Their intent is to determine how efficiently they could disperse chemical agents.
1953 Joint Army-Navy-CIA experiments are conducted in which tens of thousands of people in New York and San Francisco are exposed to the airborne germs Serratia marcescens and Bacillus glogigii.
1953 CIA initiates Project MKULTRA. This is an eleven year research program designed to produce and test drugs and biological agents that would be used for mind control and behavior modification. Six of the subprojects involved testing the agents on unwitting human beings.
1955 The CIA, in an experiment to test its ability to infect human populations with biological agents, releases a bacteria withdrawn from the Army's biological warfare arsenal over Tampa Bay, Fl.
1955 Army Chemical Corps continues LSD research, studying its potential use as a chemical incapacitating agent. More than 1,000 Americans participate in the tests, which continue until 1958.
1956 U.S. military releases mosquitoes infected with Yellow Fever over Savannah, Ga and Avon Park, Fl. Following each test, Army agents posing as public health officials test victims for effects.
1958 LSD is tested on 95 volunteers at the Army's Chemical Warfare Laboratories for its effect on intelligence.
1960 The Army Assistant Chief-of-Staff for Intelligence (ACSI) authorizes field testing of LSD in Europe and the Far East. Testing of the european population is code named Project THIRD CHANCE; testing of the Asian population is code named Project DERBY HAT.
1965 Project CIA and Department of Defense begin Project MKSEARCH, a program to develop a capability to manipulate human behavior through the use of mind-altering drugs.
1965 Prisoners at the Holmesburg State Prison in Philadelphia are subjected to dioxin, the highly toxic chemical component of Agent Orange used in Viet Nam. The men are later studied for development of cancer, which indicates that Agent Orange had been a suspected carcinogen all along.
1966 CIA initiates Project MKOFTEN, a program to test the toxicological effects of certain drugs on humans and animals.
1966 U.S. Army dispenses Bacillus subtilis variant niger throughout the New York City subway system. More than a million civilians are exposed when army scientists drop lightbulbs filled with the bacteria onto ventilation grates.
1967 CIA and Department of Defense implement Project MKNAOMI, successor to MKULTRA and designed to maintain, stockpile and test biological and chemical weapons.
I have not given the complete list but it goes on and on. These are examples of what our government is capable of. But I am not done with you yet not by a long shot.
All the afore mentioned incidences of the governments abuses and atrocities of our citizenry were in the past. You say none of this can happen today. Is that what you are saying? Look at what has been perpetuated on our Gulf war veterans. This is an atrocity that has perpetuated by the bastards in our government. By those that don't give a damn for those that they are suppose to be looking out for the welfare of.
Can you see now the lies and deceptions of our government. Maybe you need one more of this depleted uranium bullshit.
If you read Just Because you Don't See Chains Doesn't Mean There isn't Any you have already been inundated with the possible deceptions and contrivances of our government. Despite all the eyewitness reports of explosions going off within the buildings and also the testimonies of explosive experts in the movie Zeitgeist that you saw in part 1 you are still not convinced. Ok, let me give you a template of something that we know for sure was planned. Operation Nothwoods or Northwoods was a 1962 plan by the US Department of defense to stage acts of simulated or real terroism on US Soil and against US interests and then put the blame of these acts on Cuba, so as to generate U.S. public support for military action against the Cuban government of Fidel castro.
As part of the U.S. government's Operation Mongoose anti-Castro initiative, the plan, which was not implemented, called for various false flag actions, including simulated or real state sponsored acts of terriorism (such as hijacked planes) on U.S. and Cuban soil. The plan was proposed by senior U.S. Department of Defense leaders, including the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Lyman Louis Lemnitzer.
Did any of that sound familiar? Google it, look up everything I have said here you will find that it is all true. The people who run our government from the top down to the bottom are all bastards of the worst sort.
The next and final installment will bring it all together. You will then see why government and the media will not help the impoverished, Homeless or the indiginet. You will find out why they want to keep them in their condition and also why it benefits them.

I was in a store in down town Tucson Arizona today getting myself a pack of cigarettes. The guy staggers by the store trips on his own feet and falls down. He is obviously Homeless . He is wearing a backpack slung over one shoulder with a bedroll tied to the bottom and a one liter water bottle tied to the bedroll with a piece of cord.
This guy in the store had just made his purchase and was walking out of the store and on the way out he says "them goddamn fukin Homeless folks there all a bunch of drunks and drug addicts". Well I'm in no mood to get into confrontation today so I let the guy go.
I went out side and knelt down on one knee next to the fallen fellow and I asked him is he alright. He states that he is alright but then I notice something about him. He is wearing a combination of civilian and military clothes and on his military shirt he has pinned all these metals. So I ask him where id he get these metals? He tells me he spent two tours in Iraq and he received them for his bravery and valor. I then asked him how did he get into this condition of being Homeless and drunk. He says that the alcohol is the only thing that takes the pain away and if he gets drunk he won't have the reoccurring nightmares.
I asked him having been in the military and served during wartime why isn't the military taking care of him (I already knew the answer but I had to hear it from the horses mouth). He said that he has PTSD and at first the military health care system acted like they were going to take care of him but then his superior officers accused him of being a slacker and for the sake of the morale of his company and the rest of the military they kicked him out. He said that drinking was the only way he can keep from killing himself and that killing himself would be a sin.
To make a much longer story short I put him in touch with a military support group that will help him.
The point I want to make here is let us say that you are Homeless and mainstream society makes it a point that you know that they look down on you in a most disparaging way what means of surcease from the sorrow of it would you seek out to give you at least a meager break. Suppose you wanted to escape from the whole scene at least for a short period of time what avenue is available to you? Drugs and alcohol is the answer.
Yes there are a lot of Homeless individuals that started out addicts and plummeted because of the addiction into Homelessness . But you and I contribute to the number of addicted Homeless people because of our apathy toward them. Because of the way that we treat them we drive even those that were not addicts before they became Homeless into addiction.
There are an estimated 200,000 Homeless vets and an estimated ¾ of a million combined Homeless people in 2007. many, many of them are turning to addiction because of our and our governments lack of care.
The ex soldier that I just told you about is not an exception to the rule. The military with it's callous and militaristic thinking processing are kicking soldiers out of the military left and right they have created an atmosphere in which no soldier that wants to make a career out of the military will admit that they are having problems. You then wonder why he hear of atrocities such as soldiers killing civilians that are not enemy combatants?
Our system is fuked up I mean seriously fuked up. When we allow any person man or woman who has lost limbs and possibly their own sanity to protect us to end up on the streets eating out of dumpsters and sleeping in the alleys then we have really, really screwed up. Colonel Davud Hunt, US Army (Ret) states that "A nation that does not care for its veterans does not deserve them".
It is not just the Veterans any time we allow anyone to end up on our streets groveling for a mere existence is a crime.
I say that we have got to change the public mind about this very bad problem. We need to find out about Homelessness in out towns, where are the shelters, feeding kitchens, what are the needs. We need to help fulfill those needs. We also need to form public interest groups and lobby our congressmen, hold news conferences, make public service announcements. We need to do what ever we need to do to alleviate the situation in our cities and towns with our Homeless .
